The NCAA will grant relief for the use of a season of competition for spring student-athletes, it was announced Friday.

The news comes in the wake of the NCAA's unprecedented decision Thursday to cancel both its winter and spring championships due to the recent coronavirus outbreak.

According to a statement from the NCAA's Division I Council Coordination Committee, all Division I sports will operate under the guidelines of a recruiting dead period until April 15. The Division II Administrative Committee implemented the same recruiting dead period on Friday.

The NCAA added that conferences and institutions should make decisions and take action in the best interests of their student-athletes and communities without first seeking approval through an interpretation or waiver.

The Division II and III Administrative Committees also provided relief for spring student-athletes on Friday by granting them another season of eligibility.

Softball America will continue to provide updates about this situation as they emerge.
