Kathryn Sandercock
Florida StateNotes:2023 stats (as of 4/26/23): 24-3, 1.15 ERA, 98 SO, 157.2 IP
Notes: Pressure creates diamonds, and Sandercock was a gem in May. The senior went 7-0 at the time this ranking was created, with a ranked win over Duke in the ACC Tournament championship game to secure the program's 19th tournament championship. This effort helped her to be named the ACC Tournament MVP. However, her best performance came on a bigger stage in the winner-take-all regional final against South Carolina. Sandercock pitched a perfect game, the program's first perfect game in NCAA Tournament history, with only 59 pitches en route to Florida State's 1-0 victory. Earlier in the month, Sandercock was named the 2023 ACC Pitcher of the Year. - 2
Ashley Rogers
TennesseeNotes:2023 stats (as of 5/24/23): 17-1, .73 ERA, 165 SO, 124.1 IP
Notes: Tennessee's historic season continued in May, and a large part of that was due to the right arm of Ashley Rogers. In May, Rogers helped the Vols secure the SEC Tournament championship. The most hits she gave up in a game this month at the time this ranking was created was five in her complete-game shutout against the Gamecocks. The All-SEC First-Team honoree lowered her earned run average from .81 to .73 with her performances. - 3
Cassidy Curd
DukeNotes:2023 stats (as of 5/24/23): 18-1, 1.50 ERA, 153 SO, 121.1 IP
Notes: The future of college softball continues to look bright and the freshman Curd is one of the reasons why. Her best performance came against Clemson in the ACC Tournament semifinal round, as she tossed a no-hitter against the Tigers. Curd's biggest strikeout performance came in her win in the regional final against Charlotte with 10, sending the Blue Devils to the Super Regional round. The First-Team All-ACC honoree also lowered her earned run average from 1.68 to 1.50. - 4
Valerie Cagle
ClemsonNotes:2023 stats (as of 5/24/23): 25-6, 1.20 ERA, 186 SO, 186 IP
Notes: The best two-way player in the country struck again in May. Her best performance was in her win against Auburn that advanced Clemson to the Regional final, as she tossed a one-hit shutout. She had a double-digit strikeout performance in May against North Carolina, as she struck out 12 Tar Heel batters. Before the Super Regional round, the ACC Player of the Year had 21 strikeouts in 25 innings pitched during May. - 5
Mariah Lopez
UtahNotes:2023 stats (as of 5/24/23): 21-5, 2.19 ERA, 184 SO, 175.2 IP
Notes: The Utes put themselves back in the national conversation this season. The efforts of Lopez largely contributed to Utah's success in 2023. In May, Lopez propelled Utah to the inaugural Pac-12 Tournament championship. The southpaw also tallied a pair of wins over Oregon in May. In her 14 innings pitched against the Ducks, Lopez only gave up one earned run with 13 strikeouts. She registered all three wins in the Salt Lake City Regional with a pair of those coming against SEC-foe Ole Miss. In 16.1 innings of work in Regional play, Lopez only surrendered a pair of earned runs with 15 strikeouts. She was named an All-Pac-12 First-Team honoree. - 6
Danielle Williams
NorthwesternNotes:2023 stats (as of 5/24/23): 22-1, 2.23 ERA, 182 SO, 147.2 IP
Notes: Williams continued to keep Northwestern in the national spotlight in May. The graduate student propelled Northwestern to big-time postseason success once again this year. In her 42.1 innings pitched in May before this ranking was created, she surrendered just eight earned runs while striking out 40 batters. She recorded a double-digit strikeout performance against Eastern Illinois in the Evanston Regional opener. Earlier this month, she was named a First-Team All-Big Ten selection. - 7
Payton Gottshall
TennesseeNotes:2023 stats (as of 5/24/23): 15-1, 1.52 ERA, 124 SO, 96.2 IP
Notes: What makes the Vols so tough to prepare for is that they don't just have a solid arm in Rogers, but also in Gottshall. One of her biggest wins in May came against Alabama in the SEC Tournament semifinals, when she only gave up a pair of earned runs with five strikeouts in the complete-game effort. She also recorded the win in the SEC Tournament final against South Carolina. In Regional play, she pitched five innings of Tennessee's combined no-hit bid against Northern Kentucky. - 8Last: 3
Jordy Bahl
OklahomaNotes:2023 stats (as of 5/24/23): 16-1, 1.10 ERA, 150 SO, 114.1 IP
Notes: While Bahl did not have to pitch much due to Oklahoma's deep staff, her work was quality. The Big 12 Pitcher of the Year recorded a save against Texas to secure the Big 12 Tournament championship for the Sooners. One of her biggest wins in May came against Oklahoma State in Stillwater with a complete-game, eight-strikeout performance. Another big win for Bahl in May came against Missouri in the Norman Regional when she only allowed the Tigers to scratch across one hit over five innings of work. - 9
Jaala Torrence
AlabamaNotes:2023 stats (as of 5/24/23): 9-2, 2.08 ERA, 63 SO, 80.2 IP
Notes: With Alabama's ace Montana Fouts out in the Regional round due to an injury, head coach Patrick Murphy turned to Jaala Torrence in the circle and her clutch efforts lifted the Crimson Tide back to the Super Regional round. Torrence tallied all three of the Crimson Tide's wins in the Tuscaloosa Regional. She pitched 18.2 innings without giving up a run, while striking out 17 batters. - 10
Gretchen Mead
Middle TennesseeNotes:2023 stats (as of 5/24/23): 20-5, 2.00 ERA, 120 SO, 174.2 IP
Notes: The Blue Raiders' season was historic because they not only advanced to the NCAA Tournament for only the second time, but they also captured the program's first NCAA Tournament win. Mead won three games for her team in the NCAA Tournament, with one coming against Alabama. In her win against the Crimson Tide, Mead gave up five hits, one earned run and recorded a pair of strikeouts in the complete-game victory. She also defeated Central Arkansas twice in the Tuscaloosa Regional. Mead pitched 12 innings of shutout softball against Central Arkansas. She also tallied three wins en route to the Blue Raiders becoming conference champions.
